Gyre

2017. 8. 30 ~ 9. 30
Yun-Chul Kim, the winner of the COLLIDE International Award 2016 run by CERN(Conseil European pour la Recherche Nucleaire Geneva), has presented a series of works embracing a wide range of genres and unveiling his profound knowledge in technology at numerous exhibitions including Evanescent (SongEun Art Space, 2016), Beijing Media Art Biennale (2016), and Super Nature (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, 2014).
Kim’s first exhibition at Gallery BATON, Gyre offered the audience an opportunity to discover his philosophy and achievement in several major themes: the materiality of unconventional artistic media: the interrelation between materials and materials, materials and devices, and materials and light: the derivation of these relations.
This exhibition included two site-specific artworks – Triaxial Pillars II and Gyre. Exceptionally produced precision equipments are attached on the surface of the large-scale installations; they create the feast of diffusions and traces of light along with the flow of fluid constantly shifted by the coexistence of controls and neglects. They consequently allow spectators not only to encounter moments that they have not experienced, but also to contemplate the origin of materials when spectator gaze at them.
Through his practice, Yun-Chul Kim removes symbolic and cultural signs objectified on every subject and presents a certain reverie visually as materials which are reminiscent of insoluble pictogram found in an unknown place or un-awakened dreams.
