About Gallery EM

2F, 14, Apgujeong-ro 71-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea

Gallery EM opened its doors in 2007 in Chungdam-dong, Seoul’s mecca of art & fashion. Gallery EM’s mission is to exhibit the finest quality of art by talented artists from across the globe and to promote their works both in the domestic and international art markets. The gallery strives to globalize the Korean art market by introducing it to a wide spectrum of works by international artists. Gallery EM creates its exhibitions through close collaboration with artists, independent curators, and art critics. A viewer-friendly space, the gallery also acts as a liaison between Korean artists and the rest of the world. In order to promote Korean artists worldwide, the gallery regularly participates in international art fairs and continuously encourages exhibitions of our represented artists in other countries.

Past Exhibition

Meta-square / Meta-cube

2017. 8. 31 ~ 9. 30
Myung-Seop Hong had a solo exhibition titled Meta-square / Meta-cube from August 31 to September 30, 2017. The exhibition was a revival of his past series, Square Operation and Developing of the 1970s and 1980s. Hong’s work s draw on the geometrical shapes to reveal conceptual terms, the order of the cosmos and the principles of the world, in which we perceive and live. The artist counts ‘concept’ as an integral element of his work, yet it is based on the premise of cognition that one perceives and obtains through direct physical experiences. This aspect provides that Hong’s sculptures do not represent an outcome of his intention to go ‘beyond the plane’, but suggests that the artist has much more flexible thinking than the conceptual artists of the West.
The work of Myung-seop Hong has developed from persistent aesthetic inquiries. His work has no chronological order, and the most important element in his work is the ‘concept.’ By virtue of this, he has been recognized and appreciated as one of the important conceptual artists in Korean art.
Although his work is usually not easy to understand, they represent an aesthetic achievement. Referencing his previous works to recreate, the artist practices his art and treats his work as a kind of play. He has been producing works with an attention paid to such ecological concepts as ‘creation’ and ‘extinction’. Resisting against a series of general consensus formed in society, his works have a vein of meta-criticism. He has used a wide array of media as tools to form his artistic language. His work rarely takes a figurative form, as Hong considers an ‘abstract’ form as a resistance to the phenomenal world of reality.
The body plays an important role in Hong’s work. He has been delving into conceptual art on a wider horizon by emphasizing a cognitive experience, derived not only from a visual perception but also from a physical perception. His work shows contemporaneity and modernity, and his artistic world shed new light through the exhibition, where his past works was ‘re-called’ into a new life.
