In-Seob Lee, Soo-Young Seo : Imperial Four Seasons

2017.6.1. – 6.4.
Although Lee In-Seob makes intensive use of western materials, his works are still instilled with and grounded by an underlying oriental sensibility. Soo-Young Seo reinterpretes in her own way the elegance and dignity of Korean imperial household drawing on a traditional color technique. Both of them use gold extensively. Seo’s work presents the usage of their common material-gold in today’s korean painting exhibition.
Ranging from small pieces up to 150 size frames (227x182cm), various dimension of the two artists’ paintings create compositions of aesthetic interaction, – a symphony of unrestrained and vigorous brush strokes. Lee’s gorgeous and peculiar mixing of colours and technique, paired together with Seo’s splendid golden elegance will result in a joyful and noble juxtaposition -a sumptuous showcase of Korean contemporary painting.

Curator’s Note
The four seasons of nature and indeed the four seasons that define and span the life cycle of us as human beings communicate each other. The imperial household of our ancestors were preoccupied with preserving their dignity and legacy. In the works of both these artists there is some hidden circular repetition and a desire for continuation. In this sense these very different bodies of word are connected like Möius strip. Significantly both of them use gold, although persuing different horizons, yet their own way the everlasting property of gold seeking to create an elixir of immortality – a transmutation for both body and soul.
