About PARK RYU SOOK Gallery

309 Nature Poem Bldg., Apgujeong-ro 461, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Korea

For more than 30 years, PARK RYU SOOK Gallery has been introducing contemporary art to both the Korean and international art market. Founded in 1983, the gallery is recognized as a pioneer in creating what is now a vibrant contemporary art scene in Seoul’s Gangnam area. It has contributed to establishing careers of some of Korea’s most important artists, from the first generation of Korean modern/contemporary artists including Tschang-Yeul Kim, Seo-Bo Park, and Kwang-Young Chun, to today’s most promising artists such as Jeong-Hwa Choi, Joon Kim, Seung-Ho Yoo, and Seung-Hee Lee.
Consequently, the gallery has been committed to promoting Korean contemporary art overseas by participating in international art fairs, including the Abu Dhabi Art Fair and Art Basel. It has also worked to introduce leading international artists to Korean audiences, providing opportunities to observe current developments in the contemporary art world.

Born in 1958 in Cheongju, Seung-Hee Lee is a ceramic artist who has been living and working since 2008 in Jingdezhen, which is China’s ’porcelain capital.’ He has explored the similarities and differences between two-dimensional solid objects. He constantly challenges himself to escape from the stereotypes shaped by our familiar ideas and visual images, while developing a unique standard for his own ceramic works: a new approach to rendering three–dimensional porcelain in two dimensions through reliefs.
The installation with hundreds of stalks of ceramic bamboo was shown at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale, the Cheongju Museum of Art, and Hong Kong Arts Center.
The exhibition featured two notable series of works by Lee: his ceramic paintings and bamboo installations. In its last two exhibitions, the gallery focused on Lee’s ceramic painting series as a way of establishing his identity. Meanwhile, Lee has been participating in international biennial events and institutional exhibitions while conducting his new and ambitious bamboo project.
Where his previous works adopted red and white hues, Lee’s new piece of artwork is being developed in black tones as a way of exploring further artistic possibilities. This was the first time when this series was introduced in Seoul or at a commercial gallery. At the same time, his new ceramic paintings were exhibited to carry on the series’ success.
